Spiderman 2 UGH!!...

I went and saw Spiderman 2 this last weekend.  Ugh.  Double Ugh.  I don't know what in the world got into the reviewers because it received really good reviews.  I thought it stunk to high heaven.

I know it's hard to say this about a movie featuring a college student who can climb walls and shoot webs out of his wrists, but it was just unrealistic.  Perhaps this is my teenage-comic-book-nerd coming out, but I remember the comic book quite clearly, and Spiderman was not invulnerable.  He was a regular guy who got hurt just like everyone else.  He just had some other super powers.

All of a sudden though, he's falling off of 10 story buildings and not getting hurt, catching entire walls and holding them up, and stopping commuter trains with his bare hands?  Come on now.  The ammount of stuff that happened to him in that movie was just ridiculous.  He's not Superman, he's Spiderman, which is really part of the character's charm.  He's a regular guy who can do some cool stuff.

But the absolute end for me was when they decided they could extinguish an out of control fusion reaction by drowning it in the East River.  I'm as willing as anyone to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the story but even I have my limits.  IT'S A FRIGGIN' FUSION REACTION FOR GODS SAKE!!  Last I checked nuclear reactions aren't much effected by water, but what do I know.   I'll bet when the folks at Chernobyl saw that, they were kicking themselves for not thinking of it themselves (and yes, I do know that normal nuclear power plants operate with fission reactions, not fusion reactions.  The principle still applies.)

*Sigh*  Oh well.  Chalk up another super hero movie franchise to the junk yard.  At least Batman made it to number three before it got stupid.
