A few random thoughts...
- I'm finding Marines to be, as a rule, assholes. They are humorless, tactless, one dimensional people. Of course, as with any broad generality there are exceptions. But I'm finding the "Marine = Asshole" equation to be a pretty accurate guide in my dealings with the Marine Corps.
- It's rained here the last 3 days or so, which is nice because it keeps the dust down. However, on the whole, I am very grateful to be deployed to a dry climate. Wet weather makes everything more difficult.
- I've found many Iraqi buildings to have a distinctly seventies motif to their interior decorating. Y'know, pale green walls, oddly shaped furniture, brown and orange combinations here and there. All in all it's kind of ugly. Even the Presidential Palace is a little tacky once you get over all the crystal, marble and high ceilings.
- They have a stray dog here in Camp Phoenix named Mud. He's gotten to be sort of a mascot. Evidently they made a little "access badge" for the dog since he's always in the compound, but the Iraqis got mad. If they can't get a badge, they figured, why are they giving one to a dog? So they took the dog's badge back.
- I ate at the Al Rasheed hotel yesterday and today for lunch. Unfortunately they won't let you take any pictures, but I snuck a few anyway. To be honest, there's not much to see. There's a cool fountain out in front of the hotel, that's about it.
- I went to midnight chow the other night and what did I find in the soda cooler but a whole stack of near beer! Granted, it's non-alcoholic Iraqi malted beverage, but it was better than another Diet Pepsi.
- I went over to the CMATT office yesterday, and it was like someone had died in there. You could feel the blood being sucked out of you as you entered the door. No one was talking to each other. The only communication occurring was between two Army people in the corner mouthing messages to each other silently over their adjoining desks. This office is commanded by a Marine Corps Colonel. I noticed later that night that they returned to the tent around midnight.
Contrast that with he J6 office which I went to next which had Prince's Let's Go Crazy blaring on one computer, CNN International playing on another one, and a whole lot of laughing. J6 is commanded by an Army Colonel. They go to lunch together as a group daily and go home around 6 pm.
God, I am so glad I'm in the Army.
